Sydney sketching : News (September 2011)

September 23, 2011

News for local urban sketchers, in and around commitments to plein air sketching events organised by the Sydney Sketch Club:

DARLINGTON NSW 2008. The riot squad arrested seven squatters this week occupying the empty church building at Sydney University. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, it’s a delightful sandstone building surrounded by lots of lawn. The last time I visited it was as the venue for an intimate chamber music concert.

GLEBE NSW 2037. City of Sydney Council is in the process of restoring the 130-year old Glebe Town Hall for a finish date of mid-2012.

HAROLD PARK NSW 2037. The Paceway has gone and is being replaced by Mirvac highrise. The good news is that the former Rozelle Tram Depot will be conserved.

ANNANDALE. NSW 2038. Sat 24 Sept sees the opening of the Hawthorne Canal Bridge. This pedestrian bridge is indirectly associated with the GreenWay, the now-deferred pedestrian/cycleway and light rail extension from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill, opening up a “green” transport corridor between Iron Cove and the Cooks River. Coincidentally this same route (used as a freight rail corridor) was proposed for a canal in the 19th century; along with the Alexandra Canal near Sydney Airport, the idea was to create a city full of working canals, a “Venice of the South”. GreenWay Festival, 23-29 October (

LEICHHARDT NSW 2040. Sun 30 October. Norton Street Italian Fiesta, 10am-5pm.

BALMAIN NSW 2041. The 1880s Fenwik’s Store building (one of the longest running waterfront industries in Balmain, operating from 1870 to 1986) is being restored as part of redevelopment around the Bells Store building at Weston Street, Balmain.

RHODES NSW 2137. October 15 is the annual Open Day at Derivan. Happily this coincides with the 33rd World Wide SketchCrawl (TM).
