Cronulla NSW 2230

December 9, 2011

Cronulla Beach (south) looking north to Wanda and Greenhills deon sitting outside the surf life saving club house. There’s a lot to be said for an artist being very familiar with his subject: there is no subject I know better than this beach. I surprised myself with the degree of my understatement, with even the “ghost” of the former Cecil Hotel at left.

My first attempt at Derwent Tinted Charcoal pencils. The beach requires yellow and blue and green to do the scene justice. I have however discovered a charcoal that be effectively worked on A4-sized paper because these pencils can be sharpened to a fine point (so sketches can be scanned and uploaded to the Internet). “Normal” charcoal, willow and compressed (and the same goes for soft pastels, Conte, etc.) are all much better suited to larger A3 or A2.

Believe it or not, there are eight or so different pencils used here. I think the next step is to do a figure study or portrait in just one colour each, ideally on some tinted Canson paper.
