Pitt-Castell wax black and sanguine pencil, Prismacolour coloured pencils.
Fitted in this in before going out to vote this morning in a State by-election. I thought of drawing the portraits of the candidates from their brochures delivered to my letterbox.
Keeping everything in a high key (as required when working on white paper) is critical, and difficult. It’s vitally important not to represent all the shadows, or represent them as dark as they really are when seen in real life (or in photos). Not copying “too much” or “too closely” from real life is one of those conventions in art, like having the light from the upper left-hand side of the face (so-called “Intellectual Light”).
