Tempe NSW 2044 – IKEA

October 26, 2012

More exploring my local area in the name of ‘Deep Topography, the largest IKEA store in the Southern Hemisphere. The walk from Entrance to Exit through the shop is 2.5km.

Even with this view from the Princes Hwy across a 5×8″ double-spread , I couldn’t fit in the entire width of the building. Below the IKEA sign you might be able to pick out three parked cars.

Far right is of course the IKEA admin office, a former prominent Art Deco tower and factory once owned by the Penfold’s Wine Company. In this Art Deco factory – very modern for its time with staff cafeteria and natural light, Penfold’s (the largest wine company in the Commonwealth in the 1950s) bottled wine brought into Sydney from the country. While the Art Deco building was retained, a 19th-century house (originally used as a mental asylum) was not.
